FDA Approves Cymbalta for Fibromyalgia Treatment
In late June, the FDA approved Cymbalta for treating fibromyalgia related pain. Cymbalta belongs to a class of drugs called serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors and has proven to reduce chronic pain in patients. Cymbalta is also approved for use in treating depression and anxiety.
Clinical Trials
There were two clinical trials run, including 874 fibromyalgia patients. The patients took either a placebo or Cymbalta for three months. Cymbalta reduced pain when compared with the placebo. Patients scored their pain on a Brief Pain Inventory. Within the first week, 51% and 55% of the patients on Cymbalta noted a 30% improvement in their pain. The side effects included nausea, dry mouth, constipation, decreased appetite, and sleepiness. For more information on the study and the side effects of Cymbalta, visit the Cymbalta website.
